My first apartment in Japan so small that when my brother came to visit, he joked that we’d have to breathe in shifts so that we didn’t use up all the oxygen in the room. A bit of an exaggeration, but the place was tiny enough that all of my movements had to be controlled and precise, unless I wanted to knock something over and start a domino effect that would topple everything I owned. That meant living small, with only the things absolutely necessary for life in this transient plane of existence.

I blame this lack of proper furniture for my not producing a manga comic masterpiece during that phase of my life, and not my complete lack of artistic talent or ability to craft a narrative about anything other than the trials and tribulations faced by handsome online writers as they romance their legions of female groupies. After all, just think of what I could have created if I’d had one of these desks belonging to some of the most successful manga artists in the industry…

These simple, black and white curtains are a fitting backdrop for the desk of…

Bleach creator Tite Kubo, a man often criticized for his stark background art.

We spot at least one bikini pin-up in this workspace…

Eiichiro Oda’s crew of One Piece pirates! It takes a little bit of chaos to make a series that good, you know.

And here we can’t help but notice the snoozing kitty perched atop the shelves. This can only belong to…

Tomoko Ninomiya, writer and artist of the smash hit blend of classical music and romance, Nodame Cantabile.

We’d smile, too, if we got to draw cute girls all day…

but either way, Ken Akamatasu, of Love Hina and Negima fame, is a happy guy.

You’d expect the office to be a little shadowy for a legend like…

Shigeru Mizuki, the man responsible for perennial horror/comedy series Gegege no Kitaro.

Moving on, this orderly, modern production area is a world away from some of the cosy corners we’ve encountered so far. Which famous manga-ka could call a place like this home?

None other than Shaman King’s Hiroyuki Takei and his team.

And finally, is anyone really surprised to see…

that Golgo 13 creator Takao Saito smokes as he draws? Proof that at least some cool people still smoke.
