In one of the most shocking and bizarre stories we’ve heard all day, reports coming out of North Korea through China are claiming that on 20 August singer Hyon Song-wol of the Unhasu Orchestra was executed by firing squad along with other members and several performers from the Wangjaesan Light Music Band.

These musicians and performers were all reportedly charged with violating anti-pornography laws. Although prominent and distinguished musicians from these groups including orchestra leader Mun Kyong-jin were among those executed, Hyon Song-wol is the most notable due to her past relationship with the Supreme Leader of North Korea.

It was reported in Chosun Ilbo that Kim Jong-un and Hyon Song-wol were an item long before he ascended to the top ranks of the nation. However, they were forced to end the relationship. To thicken the plot further, Kim Jong-un’s current wife Ri Sol-ju had also been a member of the Unhasu Orchestra.

According to sources, the performers were arrested for creating sex tapes of themselves and selling them to people in North Korea and China. Adding to the charges, some of the musicians and dancers were said to be in possession of Bibles (contraband in North Korea), which of course would be in keeping with the behavior of pornographers(!)

The condemned performers were subjected to execution by firing squad. In this case machine guns were said to have been used. The families and fellow performers were present at the public execution and afterwards the relatives were all rounded up and sent to a camp for political prisoners.

If these reports and apparently trumped-up charges are true, it’s simply amazing how making a sex tape can get you brutally killed in one part of the world but get you a top-rated reality television show and lucrative endorsement deals in another.

We’ll bring you more details as they become clear.
