Although they’ve been long touted as “man’s best friend,” dogs have kind of taken a back seat to cats on the internet. Sure, dogs are much appreciated for their unflinching loyalty and companionship, but they tend to fall short of fluffy felines when it comes to being photogenic. So with this in mind, some bold dog owners have taken it upon themselves to add more depth and character to their pets by giving them a pair of good old fashioned eyebrows.

The trend of eyebrow-enhanced pooches has washed up on Japan’s shores recently amid great fanfare and net user comments of “Kawaii!“; “They look human!”; and “I spit my coffee out!” So, let’s all take a look at what emotions can be conveyed when dogs get human-style eyebrows.

Japan has long enjoyed a thick set of eyebrows for comedic and emotive effect from comedienne Ayako Imoto to Ryo-san from Kochikame. So slap on a pair of black lines to an already cute dog and you have a dramatic combination. For example, they can make a dog look:

Surprised

Intrigued

Saucy

Pleased

Concerned

Roguish

Offended

Flabbergasted

Urbane

Marxist

Contemplative

Suspicious

Uncertain

Intense

Dignified

Jocular

Thrilled

Paranoid

Introspective

Sympathetic

Regretful

Remorseful

Although the results of drawing eyebrows on dogs is undeniably cute, we advise dog-owners to consult your veterinarian before drawing on their face. Some of those markers can be dangerous, and we can’t help feeling a little bit sorry for these pooches, not least because they’re probably the only ones not in on the joke!
