Well, wouldn’t you know it? Just because app developers are releasing a program which would allow otaku the interactive experience of sleeping next to Hatsune Miku doesn’t mean that Japan’s commonly found love pillows are losing any ground. In fact, two of Animate’s most recent pillow case and perfume sets sold out within a day of release! There’s nothing about this item set that isn’t to some extent creepy.

Last week Animate released a pair of body pillow covers featuring towel-clad teenagers from the series Ore no Imoto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai (My Little Sister Can’t be this Cute). The first is Ayase Aragaki, holding her towel shut while locked in a pair of handcuffs. The second is a character referred to as Kuroneko, who barely has her bits covered by the pink towel wrapped around her.

These pillow covers come packaged with soap-scented spray in what they’re calling a Fresh from the Bath Sniff Sniff Set. Each set comes with one pillowcase and 50 mL of pillow mist for 10,000 yen (US$100).

It’s not all that surprising that this young adult series is seeing a great deal of sexualization in its official merchandise. The Kuroneko pillow cover is actually an item from last year’s line-up, with its immense popularity inspiring a massive reprint and the addition of an Ayase case. Promotional images recommend spraying the soap-scented mist onto your pillow before wrapping yourself around it and breathing deeply, creating a sense that these characters are with you straight from the bath.

The thing that’s most surprising about these items is that both of these character sets sold out within a day of their release, all in spite of their hundred-dollar price tag. As of right now, Animate’s online shop makes no mention of doing another reprint. For the sake of Japan’s already declining birth rate, that might actually be a good thing.
