Akira Toriyama Hunter Hunter

It’s simply amazing to see what is created when manga artists draw other artists’ original characters. We’ve seen it before when the likes of One Piece‘s Eiichiro Oda and Death Note’s Takeshi Obata celebrated ten years of Naruto with original fanart. Now here’s one from manga artist, Takumi, who has chosen to draw popular manga, Hunter x Hunter, in the style of Akira Toriyama, the man behind classics such as Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the series, here’s a picture of the Hunter x Hunter cast. See if you can match the originals to the new Toriyama-style characters.

The new Dragon Ball-esque Hunter x Hunter characters have been given a somewhat sinister hue, with deeply defined facial features and scowls that were once smiles and cheeky grins. It’s undeniable that both versions were created at the hand of a skilled artist, but which one do you prefer? Maybe a better question would be, which manga would you most want to read: the original or Takumi’s re-envisioned version?
