Hong Kong-based designer, Ruan Hao, of architecture firm, LYCS, has created the CATable, a desk filled with tunnels and passageways for your cat to explore while you type away on the table top. It combines modern design with feline functionality, giving rise to the ultimate work/play…with your cat, desk. However, like with any expensive toy, your cat may just land up playing with the box it came in instead.

The table sans cat has a beautiful, albeit unconventional, design on its own:

But add your favorite feline friend and it transforms into the ultimate play area.

Ruan Hao explains his inspiration for the CATable on his website:

People who live with cats always have these kind of experiences.

1. Putting away the cat from your laptop is like a sentimental ritual of temporary farewell.

2. A proper sized hole could be so irresistible to cats. Their curiosity would be greatly satisfied through repetitively exploring the unknown path behind the hole.

The design of CATable was a fusion of those experiences, as well a locus where the interaction occurs. It is a table for us, and a paradise for cats.

The CATable was exhibited at the Milan Design Week furniture fair held at the University of Milan, but is not yet available to the general public. While we wait for it to go on sale, our cats will just have to make do with climbing all over our keyboards and hanging from the bookshelves…like they even care.
