Hello Kitty Melon

Japan is home to some mighty tasty and unbelievably expensive melons, but the absolute cutest ones come from Furano Melon in Hokkaido. No, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you, that is indeed the mouthless face of Hello Kitty etched into the rind. We showed you similar melons last year, but there are a few small changes in celebration of Japan’s most famous cat turning the big 4-0.

Dubbed the “Furano Hello Kitty Melon (40th Anniversary Edition),” these cute melons now come in a special 40th Anniversary box featuring the white cat herself. Also, 100 additional melons will be sold this year, allowing customers the chance to purchase one of 400 limited edition fruits for 5,000 yen (US$48.95).

The approximately 1.8-kilogram (4-pound) kitty melons are on sale now and Furano Melon will continue to accept orders until July 30 while supplies last. If you’d like to have your own and you live in Japan, you can purchase a Hello Kitty melon here (Japanese only). Since each little melon is still growing, they won’t ship until the end of July, but you can still enjoy a few more photos of the absolutely adorable (and delicious-looking) fruit in the meantime.
