For a serious artist, there must be no greater tragedy than to see your life’s work rent asunder by a hateful public that doesn’t understand your message.

South Korean artist Eunsuk Yoo must be heartbroken, then, now that the Lotte Shopping Center in Busan has elected to remove his now-infamous Boner Spider-Man sculpture from high up on one of the center’s outer walls, because they just couldn’t grasp his high concept message.

See, the statue was placed hanging upside down – as Spidey is wont to do – from one of the walls just above the kids’ playground and adult rest area of the shopping center, meaning Spider-Man was basically waving his awkward lump in the direction of the kids. The weird twist to the story is that the statue has apparently been, er… dangling there for over a year, meaning for over 12 months people were squinting up at Spidey, wondering what kind of spider-gadget he was packing between his legs before someone made the horrifying realization that it’s a phallus.

Yoo was given the opportunity to modify the statue as an admittedly extremely understanding compromise offered by the shopping center, but the artist said he’d rather it be taken down than put some baggy trousers or something over it.

As for the Spider-Man sculpture’s fate, we can only imagine he will be spending his days lurking just outside a 1-mile radius of a South Korean suburb’s public pool.

Uncensored NSFW shots of the sculpture follow:

There also appears to be an even more disturbing headless version giving people an eyeful elsewhere in South Korea:
