I like to think of myself as someone with a pretty good ability to mentally focus. Of course, I’m not always sure I should think of myself that way, especially when I’m hungry. Sometimes, I’ll be in the middle of work when my stomach starts growling, and suddenly all I can think about is how if there was any food in my immediate vicinity, I’d fall on and devour it like a pack of ravenous monkeys.

And how do I know how a pack of ravenous monkeys eats? Simple: I watched this GIF.

Head deep enough into rural Japan, and you won’t just find mountains and forests, but monkeys, too. The country is pretty much infatuated with cute animals in general, and monkeys have earned a special place in many people’s hearts by adorably relaxing in hot springs, grooming their partners, and playing with smartphones.

There’re monkey parks and research centers dotting Japan. But while these institutions allow visitors to observe the animals’ complex, almost human-like societal structures, all of that apparently comes apart at the seams when it’s feeding time.

We’re not sure sending one dude out with a cart, having him tilt it so food spills on the ground, and then run as fast as he can is the most dignified way to serve the meal, but given how the monkeys react, we really can’t blame the guy for wanting to get out of there ASAP.

▼ Especially when you realize all of those dark splotches on the wall are also hungry monkeys.
