It’s almost Valentine’s Day, and while in many other countries that may send men scurrying out to buy roses or jewelry for their lady-love, in Japan the holiday is all about women giving their romantic partner chocolates.

But what if your sweetheart doesn’t have a sweet tooth? Well, as long as he’s got a taste for dairy and seafood, why not go with the mature alternative of fish cakes stuffed with cream cheese? And don’t worry about that combination being less romantic than sugary chocolate, because they’re still shaped like little hearts.

If you’ve never eaten kamaboko, it might seem a bit intimidating, seeing as how it’s a fish cake. However, kamaboko is surprisingly mild in taste, plus has a pleasant texture with just a hint of firmness.

It’s also pretty cute, what with its soft pink-and-white color scheme. As a matter of fact, you could say the hues even grant it a sort of romantic aura, which becomes all the more apparent when you change the kamaboko’s shape from its traditional semicircle to this:

Called Pure Hearts, these unique munchies come from Sendai-based kamaboko maker Abe Kamaboko-ten, which has been making and selling fish cakes since 1935. Each one comes filled with a dollop of Australian cream cheese.

Technically, this makes the Pure Hearts a variety of chi-kama, a mix of kamaboko and cheese that’s popularly paired with beer or other alcoholic drinks. Abe Kamaboko-ten is marketing the Pure Hearts as a more sophisticated snack, though, and implies with its website images that their new product goes well with Western-style tea.

The Pure Hearts come in a box of eight, four white and four pink, for 1,250 yen (US$10.60). They’ll only be available for a limited time, with orders being taken through the Abe Kamaboko-ten online shop here starting February 1. Thankfully, that means they should be delivered in time for you to give them to your special someone on Valentine’s Day as a present with a cheesy flavor but a sweet sentiment.
