Making news headlines around the globe, scientists were able to unboil a boiled egg. That’s pretty awesome for science, but what does that mean for us, the everyday eaters? Not a whole lot at the moment, but here is another trick with an egg you can do right in your own home. All you need is an egg, a stocking, and some household items and you can enjoy a reverse hard-boiled egg!

For an egg lover, a hard-boiled egg is a tasty snack in a self-contained package. However, for some, the only tasty part is the yolk, or kimi as it’s known in Japanese. You have to bite through rubbery, tasteless egg-white before you can get to the delicious creamy center. But what if you could switch the places of the two? Could a hard-boiled egg with the yolk on the outside, and the egg white on the inside be the best-kept egg secret?

After a Kyoto Women’s University professor found an old document with many different ways to cook eggs, she discovered a pretty interesting egg recipe. She updated this “yolk reversal” trick using a bit of modern technology and published it, setting off a flurry of egg lovers to give it a spin. It’s not as easy as it looks, but maybe you’ve got that special touch.

Here is all you need to prep a yolk reversed hard-boiled egg:

– Egg (any size)
– Cellophane tape
– Stocking
– Twist tie

That’s it! All you have to do is follow these simple instructions. First you take the egg and cover the surface with the tape to prevent it from breaking.

Then take the stocking and tie a knot in one end. Slip the taped egg into the stocking and seal off the other end close to the egg with a twist tie.

Now get spinning! Whirl that egg around, anywhere between 20 and 50 times. This is how you will reverse the insides, putting the yolk on the outside of the egg rather than in the middle. The key is when you pull the stocking, you have to be quick and fluid. Use the (power of centripetal) force!

It definitely takes a specific amount of spinning as too much or too little can lead to poor results. Once you are done, cook the egg to a hard-boiled state, and don’t worry about leaving the tape on too!

▼Bring water to a boil, place egg in the water and let it cook for 8-10 minutes.

▼Stop the cooking by putting it in an ice bath.

There you have it! If you were perfect, you could end up with something as magical as this!

However, it’s probably going to take you a few eggs to get it right.

▼Hints have included: poking a small hole in the egg before taping it and using a flashlight to see if the egg is spun well enough. A well spun egg will not be very bright.

Is the taste worth the effort of spinning up this dish? Maybe not, as complaints have included: the egg has the undesirable consistency of fish paste and the yellow outside doesn’t taste as good as a normal hard-boiled egg. Ah well, you can’t please everyone, right?

If you want a more scrambled taste, try spinning it a lot more, as it will result in a scrambled hard-boiled egg.

Whatever angle you look at it, the successful yolk reversal is pretty cool. If you got some extra stockings lying around and a carton of eggs, you can attempt this eggcelent eggsperiment yourself!
