It’s been three years since the most recent installment of the Rebuild of Evangelion, the maybe-sequel, maybe-reboot of creator Hideaki Anno’s massively influential 1995 science fiction anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. Forever committed to his artistic vision and standards, Anno remains coy as to when the fourth, and supposedly final, Rebuild film will hit theaters, even as fans the world over clamor for its release.
That’s not to say Anno and the team at his Studio Khara, the animation house responsible for the newest Evangelion theatrical features, don’t have anything to show us. Less than two months ago they shared a melancholy vision of protagonist Shinji in a brand-new six-minute animated video. This week, Studio Khara is back again with another short to be released online that promises an Evangelion mecha unit fans have never seen before, with the help of two true industry veterans, one who’s lending his talents to the Evangelion franchise for the first time.
The short anime, titled evangelion: Another Impact (Confidential), will be viewable through the Anima(tor)’s Exhibition website, just like December’s until You come to me (when your anime gets to be as popular as Evangelion, apparently people stop nagging you about capitalization and punctuation). A joint project between Studio Khara and media company Nico Nico’s corporate parent Dwango, Anima(tor)’s Exhibition is a place where Khara and its creative partners can show off their more experimental and short-form creations.
Plot details are currently sparse, but the producers describe it as being set in “another time, another place.” Playing a central role is the humanoid weapon known as Another Number, or alternately Unit Null, with its name a sinister spin on the numerical designations of the existing Evangelion mecha such as Unit-01.
As is par for the course in the Eva world, though, Unit Null’s development and testing don’t go as planned, as its human creators become unable to control it and it begins a violent rampage.
Serving as director is Shinji Aramaki, whose most recent projects include the computer-animated Appleseed and Space Pirate Captain Harlock movies. Aramaki’s career in the anime industry stretches back to the early 1980s, and he’s served as a director or designer on series as varied as Wolf’s Rain, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Bubblegum Crisis.
▼ Still the best anime, by far, about a team of power-suited mercenaries who operate out of a lingerie delivery truck.
Designing Unit Null itself is frequent Aramaki collaborator Atsushi Takeuchi. Like Aramaki, Takeuchi can list Bubblegum Crisis and Appleseed on his resume, plus animation and design credits for Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor, and Ah! My Goddess. Takeuchi also provided key animation for the third Rebuild of Evangelion film, plus the earlier Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth and End of Evangelion theatrical features.
evangelion: Another Impact (Confidential) begins streaming February 6, free of charge, on the Anima(tor)’s Exhibition website.
