A week or two ago, we brought you news of the character cast list for the newest Dragon Ball Z film, which is set to hit theaters in Japan later this year. The film will be the second personally overseen by series creator Akira Toriyama, which is great news, but the character list reveal might have struck some as kind of lukewarm.

It only listed the good guys, after all, and not a single one of them was an entirely new character – although a handful made first appearances in the last Toriyama film.

Today, though, we have some actual surprising information to share with you about Dragon Ball Z: Fukkatsu no Z: Frieza, the film’s main villain, will be sporting a “Super” version of his own this time out, and it might remind you a lot of the Monkey Idol from Indiana Jones.

That’s right: Super Frieza will be sporting some solid gold skin and will also somehow lose his weird pink face gill things in his super form. Sure, it doesn’t really seem anatomically possible for that to happen but, hey, that’s not why we watch Dragon Ball Z, is it?

We have no idea what new powers will come with Frieza’s souped-up form, but a recent manga release in Japan provides some backstory about how he got the form in the first place. The type in screenshots was too miniscule for us to make out, so we don’t know the full story yet, either, but comments suggest Frieza has somehow learned to tap even further into his innate powers; no training required for this guy… Which makes him all the more scary.

The film’s release date has yet to be announced, but fans should have their nerdiest ’90s DBZ shirts ready anyway.
