The music video for “Maegami Kiri Sugita” (produced by Yasutaka Nakata of CAPSULE) is an animation video directed by Katsuyuki Iseda. Picked up by the media and reaching over 10,000 views in just one day, the video has been causing a lot of commotion amongst J-pop fans this week, with content that apparently surprised even Natsume herself.

Natsume Mito’s debut song releases today, April 8.

The video – the work by Katsuyuki Iseda, who has a very unique style and is considered the “outsider artist of the anime world” – shows a girl in school uniform whom we can’t really assume is Natsume. It shows the girl cutting her bangs, just as the lyrics say, then the footage suddenly becomes black-and-white and a random crab-like character appears. It’s enough to give viewers the impression that this is more of a fan-made creation than an official music video. The video continues with its kookiness right the way through, and certainly kept us entertained, so we hope we can expect to see much more of this kind of insanity in the months to come.

The mastermind behind this work is Keita Kusaka, who has been gaining attention these past few years with his “Shotengai Poster Exhibition.” As soon as the questionable video hit 5,000 views, Natsume’s fans began to seek confirmation from her via Twitter. Was this legit? Was put this together?? “I haven’t seen the video yet,” she replied, “but it is my song.”

Director Iseda’s animation is the prologue and part one of the series, with part two due to be released in the beginning of March. It’s no doubt that the collaboration between director Iseda and Mr. Kusaka, who was carefully selected by director Iseda himself, will be under constant watch as they are equally unique in their own ways.

Natsume’s cuteness and personality with her mixture of humor and the unique directors’ requests is sure to make this music video stand out. The photo used for Natsume’s debut single, which stirred up almost as much commotion as the music video, was also made under Mr. Kusaka’s supervision.
