April Fools’ Day, every prankster’s favorite event of the year, is just around the corner, but what kind of amusing tricks will we see this year? Fast-food chain Burger King seems to be well prepared already, announcing a delicious meaty smelling perfume for their burger-loving customers, to be sold exclusively on April 1.

Although April Fools’ Day started long ago, most likely somewhere in Europe, it’s been picking up steam in Japan lately. Burger King thinks they’ve got a leg up on the pseudo-holiday, having even registered April 1 as “Whopper Day” with the Japanese Anniversary Association (we’re completely serious).

▼ It’s dubbed America’s Favorite Burger, but it could be Japan’s soon too if everyone dons Flame-grilled Fragrance.

As you may know, “whopper” has two meanings: 1) “A thing that is extremely or unusually large,” making it a fitting name for the ever popular, oversized hamburger, but also, 2) “A gross or blatant lie,” making April 1 the most appropriate date for “Whopper Day”.

Now that we’ve established that Burger King is all about the tomfoolery, the notion of them doing weird things on April Fools’ Day is not at all radical, if anything, it’s expected.

They just announced that on “Whopper Day,” (and only Whopper Day), every store in Japan will be stocked with a limited supply of Flame-grilled Fragrance, a perfume with the succulent scent of a 100% beef patty being cooked over an open fire.

The 30-milliliter (one-ounce) perfume will be sold only with a Whopper set and will cost a whopping 5,000 yen (US$40). That’s a whopper of a price tag (it’s up to you to decide if we mean “big” or “blatant lie,” we’re not even sure ourselves).

April Fools’ Day is fun and all, but we’re wondering if it’s worth 5,000 yen to smell like, or make someone else smell like, greasy meat. There are other, more stomach-filling ways to smell like that. We are, however, interested in how close to the actual scent they get. But who knows, maybe the price tag is the joke and it’s only going to cost 500 yen.

The more we think about it, the more fun we could have with a bottle of hamburger scent. Maybe Burger King is on to a whopper of an idea here. If you want your own bottle to prank with or just to wear in an attempt to seduce the meat-lovers around you, head to any Japanese Burger King from 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1.

Just a reminder, each location only has a small supply, so if they run out, that’s it. With that in mind, if you have your heart set on some mouth-watering perfume you might want to hit up a BK in the countryside, rather than in downtown Tokyo. Also, phone reservations are not allowed, even though it’s sure to be in such high demand that some people will try.

It’s still a few weeks away, but make sure to let us know if you get whiffs of flame-grilled burgers on the street or in the office on April 1!
