live action attack on titan top

It’s been months since we’ve heard anything about the Attack on Titan live-action remake. Last we saw, the movie posters were just coming out, and they mostly just left us hungry for more.

But finally the first trailer for the movie has been released! There were some titanic expectations going into it, and so far the response has been… well, you can watch it and decide for yourself!

The trailer premiered on the Japanese entertainment variety show ZIP. You can watch it right here in all of its teasing glory:

▼ Yes yes, birds in the sky, come on, get on with it.

▼ Oh yeah! That’s what I want! Colossal Titan! Smash ’em! Dangle ’em! Yessss!

▼ Since it’s a variety show, we get to see the guests’ reactions as they watch it. This guy doesn’t look too impressed.

▼ That’s a bit more of an appropriate wide-eyed jaw-drop.

▼ My personal reaction was something more like the last picture here.

As epic as the trailer makes the movie look, netizens were cautious about getting too excited. It is a trailer after all, so its whole purpose is to showcase the best parts of the movie and conveniently leave out anything that might turn away viewers. Opinions ranged from cautiously optimistic to downright scathing:

“It’s gonna be good, right? I can look forward to this, right?”
“You can’t hope for much from Japan-made films. Remember Lupin?
“How can they call it ‘live-action’ when it has as much CG as the anime?”
“Why did the middle-age European towns turn into Asian slums?”
“This looks like a high-budget student film.”
“Why are they all Japanese? Wasn’t Mikasa the only character of Asian descent?”
“They should’ve left it to Hollywood!”

They should be careful what they wish for. Remember Hollywood’s Dragonball Evolution? And what about the controversial casting decisions made with the upcoming Ghost in the Shell movie? For movie producers it’s a delicate tightrope-walk for sure, but let’s not get too hasty here.

What do you think of the trailer? Do you agree with the Japanese netizens, or are you already printing it out frame by frame to add to your Attack on Titan shrine? Let us know in the comments!
