The character Hestia from the anime Danmachi, known as Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? in English, has been notoriously difficult for cosplayers to pull off. How is a ribbon tied around your chest supposed to make your boobs bigger? And then how do you even move your arms?

But if one cosplayer is up to the task, it’s Taiwanese cosplayer Ma You Rong. She’s well-known for pulling off busty cosplays, and last time we saw her she was causing a controversy online for her portrayal of Naruto’s Tsunade.

Now she’s the center of an online uproar again for her attempt at a Hestia cosplay, but it’s not for the reason you may be thinking.

If you’re unfamiliar with Ma You Rong’s cosplay, here are some posts from her Facebook page so you can see what she’s well-known for:

Tsunade from Naruto looking almost out-of-character calm.

▼ Mai Shirauni for King of Fighters in her typical pose.

▼ And the epitome of busty cosplays: Lara Croft.

▼ And one non-cosplay picture thrown in because, hey, why not?

So with all those busty characters pulled off practically perfectly, it was only a matter of time before she tried her hand at a Hestia cosplay. Here’s the character she was going for:

And here’s some Facebook posts featuring the cosplay she did based on it:

▼ She seems to be trapped in some sort of shower room.

▼ At least there’s space for her to stand in the tiled prison.

▼ She’s trying to escape her bonds! Break free!

▼ You can do it! Keep going!

▼ Alas, she has succumbed to her fate. I think we can all agree it’s for the best.

If you’re a cosplay perfectionist, then you may have noticed that she’s not wearing Hestia’s white gloves and her blue hair ribbons are a bit off, but come on. She looks great and she’s having fun! Who cares about that? …right?

Wrong. After posting her pictures on social media, Ma You Rong was bombarded by comments critiquing her imperfect cosplay. She got messages like: “No gloves? Are you kidding?” “Use a wig for god’s sake,” and “You’re wearing the ribbon all wrong” among many others.

Ma You Rong has responded to her detractors, saying that she never intended it to be a one hundred-percent accurate cosplay; it was just for fun. She also added:

“It’s thanks to extreme groups of people like you haters that people are scared away from cosplaying. If you actually love cosplay, then don’t press your opinion on others. Everyone is free in the world of cosplay, and their opinion of what cosplay should be doesn’t have to be the same as you.”

Well said, Ma You Rong! As easy as it is to get caught up in cosplay being as perfectly faithful to the source material as possible, it’s important to remember that at the end of the day, for a lot of people, it’s just a fun hobby or a way to hang out with friends.

Besides, if all cosplay had to be perfectly accurate, then we wouldn’t be able to enjoy beautiful gems like this, and that would just be a travesty.
