We are pretty lucky to be living in the 21st century with all the mod-cons at our fingertips. Spare a thought for poor Saburo, a character in the TV drama series Nobunaga Concerto based on the manga by Ayumi Ishii, where he finds himself traveling back in time.

The series is a comical depiction of what happens when Saburo jumps from the present day to Japan’s feudal era, but if we all suddenly found ourselves without the modern conveniences we love, would we really be laughing? Probably not, as revealed by a poll of what viewers would hate if they found themselves sent back in time.

In the series, high school boy Saburo time travels back to the Sengoku period (1467-1603) and, because of his similar looks, finds himself being asked to stand in for Oda Nobunaga, the warlord who unified much of Japan. The real Nobunaga then works for Saburo under the name of Akechi Mitsuhide, and if that wasn’t confusing enough, famous Japanese actor Shun Oguri actually plays both characters in the TV program.

If we were able to time travel back to the Edo era, what would we hate about it the most? Many of us have fantizied about what it would be like to live in a historical time period, but would it really be all sunshine and slightly crooked smiles? A recent poll compiled the top 15 things that Nobunaga Concerto viewers would struggle with if they found themselves in a similar situation.

Here’s what they had to say:

1.  No access to clean drinking water
2.  Identity discrimination
3.  Lack of proper waste treatment and processing
4.  Not being able to take a shower

14. Traditional Japanese clothing would be such a pain to wear

And finally…

15. Not being able to drink coffee!

Life was tough back then, wasn’t it? How would any of us survive if we weren’t able to sit on the toilet, reading our handheld Wi-Fi-enabled device, tweeting about our phobia of samurais and dark streets, and planning our next holiday over a cup of coffee?

What would you struggle with the most if you found yourself in the 16th century?
