The announcement at this year’s E3 that video game developer Square Enix is finally remaking Final Fantasy VII thrilled gamers old enough to fondly remember completing the RPG classic and those young enough to have never tried it alike. Fans around the world have been repeatedly watching the short preview video that gives us a glimpse at the newly rendered city of Midgar and returning characters Cloud and Barret.

Actually, though, there’s one more famous Square Enix character who can be seen in the video, as sharp-eyed viewers have pointed out.

In case you haven’t had a chance to see it yet, here’s the official announcement video.

You really can’t miss Cloud and Barret, since the former has perhaps the most instantly recognizable sword in video gaming strapped to his back, and the other has a Gatling gun for a right arm. But did you spot the third character?

Need a hint or two? The character is a woman, but not one of Final Fantasy VII’s three heroines, Tifa, Aerith, or Yuffie. She’s not even from the Final Fantasy franchise, and she shows up in this shot.

…is Aya Brea of Parasite Eve fame…

…looking just like she did in The 3rd Birthday, her most recent starring role.

So does this mean that Parasite Eve and Final Fantasy VII take place in the same world? Eh, probably not. It’s also unlikely, though not impossible, that this is a sign Parasite Eve is next in Square Enix’s remake queue. Odds are some designer just needed a texture for that billboard, and decided to slip in a little inside joke for the company’s more loyal supporters.

Unfortunately, the discovery of Aya wasn’t coupled with any uncovered information about when the long-awaited Final Fantasy VII remake will be released. We’re all going to have to be patient for a little longer before we find out, so meanwhile, if you’ve got time to kill, we’d suggest a second round of cameo-hunting.
