If you ever thought you’d been stuck in a traffic jam, you may want to think again.

Aerial footage taken yesterday in China shows what happens when thousands of people arrive at a toll booth at once as they head home after a week-long national holiday. With cars stretching as far as the eye can see and 50 lanes of vehicles, this is one traffic jam you don’t want to be in.

The drone footage was taken at a toll booth near Beijing on the G4 Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway during the peak turnaround period for millions of travellers returning from holiday via airports, trains and highways around the country.

Heavy fog on Tuesday forced the closure of major highways in northern China, compounding the problem of congestion, which places a heavy strain on China’s transport infrastructure every year.

To see the extent of the great wall of traffic, check out the footage below.

The bottleneck on the other side of the toll booth was a result of the road being drastically reduced from 50 to fewer than 20 lanes.

According to China’s National Tourism Administration, almost half of the nation’s 1.36 billion-strong population were estimated to be travelling during the holiday period between October 1 and 7. We just hope they all had a vacation spectacular enough to warrant putting up with this on their way home!
