The man caught in between the scissors gets his revenge on the happy couple thanks to the creative talents of Japanese artists.

When 15-year-old Twitter user @Takayan0813 came upon this image on the internet, no explanation was needed to understand what it was meant to portray. Clearly showing a boy and a girl holding hands while standing safely inside the handle of a pair of scissors, the image features, in the foreground, a boy with a sullen posture, looking on while standing between the blades, which threaten to slice him in two.

The picture, by artist Sam Pitipar, is striking a chord with people in Japan, with more than 30,000 Twitter users liking and retweeting the image of unrequited love, leaving comments like:

“This is deep. Love is really like this.”
“What a sad picture! I’ve been inside the scissors like that, slowly being chopped in two.”
“This is bringing back sad memories from my experience of first love.”
“Even if your crush doesn’t love you back, you can’t help staying close to them like this.”

Saddened by the image and perhaps remembering their own feelings of one-sided love, the picture has been given a twist by several commenters online, who’ve taken pen to paper to return power to the powerless, showing the boy getting his revenge on the couple.

with all three characters looking sad and forlorn.

This Twitter user decided to go into mathematical detail, calculating how much force the boy would need to exert to push the two apart, given that the blade is 3.5 times longer than the shorter end at the handle.

According to mathematics, the two lovers could be kept apart forever, provided the boy can exert a massive amount of strength!

It might not always be the way in real life, but at least in this case, the tale of unrequited love gets to have a different ending.
