30-something educator should really be old enough to know his love confession was immature and inappropriate.

One day in early February, a girl in Hyogo Prefecture walked into her junior high school classroom and took her seat. To her surprise, inside her desk she found an anonymous letter, asking if she liked a certain guy she saw every day at school.

That would make for the beginning of a sweet, ages-old story of adolescent puppy love, except for the fact that the guy in question wasn’t another student. Instead, the letter asked the girl “If you have a crush on the teacher, give some sort of sign.”

As expected, the letter quickly became a topic of gossip among the students, who asked the 30-something male teacher if he knew who wrote it. The educator replied that he didn’t, but told his pupils that it had probably been written by another student.

That might have been the end of it, except on a later date when no other students were present in the classroom, the teacher himself asked the girl “Do you like me?”

At this point, the situation might sound like the early scenes of a lewd anime, but level-headed reality quickly ensued as she dryly replied:

“You’re like, whatever, I guess.”

She then went to report his conduct to the school’s administrators. Upon questioning, the teacher admitted that he had been the one who wrote the letter and put it in the girl’s desk, after becoming smitten with her after seeing how diligently she had been applying herself to her studies. Regardless of whether the basis for his attraction was really as purehearted as he claims, the Hyogo Prefectural Board of Education has deemed his actions inappropriate, and he now faces disciplinary action.
