It might not be the most obvious choice for a Hollywood blockbuster, but ’80s classic Tetris will be getting a movie adaptation “sometime in the near future”, the Wall Street Journal reports. And Larry Kasanoff, chief executive of Threshold Entertainment, says the film will be a “sci-fi epic”!
Threshold Entertainment is the movie company behind Mortal Kombat, and they’ll be working together with The Tetris Company to develop a sci-fi film based on the classic game. “Everyone knows that Tetris is one of the best known, most beloved brands in the world,” Kasanoff said. “What everyone doesn’t know yet is this epic sci-fi story that we’re going to tell. That’s what’s really exciting.”
If the idea of a Tetris movie has you expecting anthropomorphised game pieces (they’re called tetriminos, since you asked), you’d be wrong: it’s going to be a live action film. “This isn’t a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page,” Kasanoff told the WSJ. “We’re not giving feet to the geometric shapes … What you [will] see in Tetris is the teeny tip of an iceberg that has intergalactic significance.”
Tetris is 30 years old this year and its simple yet addictive gameplay has made it a much-loved classic. It was the decision to bundle a copy with every Game Boy, however, which secured its position as a worldwide hit.
Threshold Entertainment will be hoping to mimic the success of Lego, which surpassed Mattel as the world’s biggest toy company this year as a direct result of The Lego Movie. There’s no director in place yet, or cast, but we’re pretty intrigued by the sound of this intergalactic blockbuster!
