Made with Japanese honey and lemons from the Seto Inland Sea region.

McDonald’s Japan recently announced the launching of a sub-brand called By McSweets. The new line of menu items aims to provide something a little more special than run-of-the-mill after-hamburger desserts, and hopes to draw in customers for the specific purpose of enjoying some indulgent sweets while relaxing with friends.

The opening gambit from By McSweets is a new shake based on hachimitsu lemon (literally “honey lemon”), a popular Japanese drink that blends lemon juice and honey for a refined, less sugary alternative to lemonade.

McDonald’s new honey lemon shake doesn’t just have a Japanese inspiration, either. It also uses Japanese ingredients, with domestic honey and juice from lemons grown in the Setouchi region, the country’s top citrus-growing belt that straddles the Seto Inland Sea.

The honey lemon shake, priced at 120 yen (US$1) for a small size and 200 for a medium, arrives on February 19 in the five Setouchi prefectures (Yamaguchi, Hiroshima, Okayama, Ehime, and Kagawa) before going on sale at McDonald’s across Japan on February 23 before saying good-bye in late March.
