Man in Japan breaks through his own apartment floor to attack woman’s TV

Dec 7, 2017

Used opening to launch attack with nearly four-foot-long piece of lumber.

The first time I had to pick out an apartment on my own in Japan, I ended up with some…less-than-pleasant neighbors. Two doors down from me was a loan shark who kept the entire floor awake into the early hours of the morning shouting “Hurry up and pay the money!” into his phone, and right next door was a guy with body odor so bad it sometimes seeped through the wall that separated our apartments.

Still, I didn’t have it as bad as one 41-year-old woman living in Fukuoka City. Late in the afternoon of Saturday December 2, the woman (whose name has been withheld) contacted the police after the man who lived in the unit above her suddenly smashed through his floor/her ceiling and hurled a large piece of wood into her living space.

When the police arrived, they found that the man, 33-year-old Kei Fujino, had used some sort of object to bust out a roughly square opening 50 centimeters (19.7 inches) to a side. Once he’d punched through, he threw a piece of lumber approximately 120 centimeters (47.2 inches) through the hole, smashing the woman’s TV stand. Thankfully, the woman was not injured in the incident.

The police have placed Fujino under arrest, and in what might be the strangest part of the entire ordeal, the woman and Fujino have never met each other or spoken face-to-face. As such, the police say they don’t know what prompted the attack. The apparent targeting of the woman’s television, however, could be a sign that Fujino was upset over noise from the TV’s speakers. While a noisy neighbor can be a major nuisance, the tradeoff of putting a hole through your floor to deal with the problem seems like a net loss even before you factor in getting arrested for it. Given Fujino’s destructive powers, though, hopefully the authorities are holding him in a sturdily built facility.
