Returning home for the holidays after being away for months at school or work, Twitterers all over Japan are finding their pets’ love is rather short-lived. Or at least their memories are!
From the last few days of the year to the first few days of the next, many Japanese companies, as well as colleges and universities across the country, go on holiday and everyone travels back to their respective hometowns or their parents’ homes to spend New Year with family. It’s a time many look forward to—a time to unwind, catch up with friends and family members, eat great food, and, perhaps best of all, getting some furry snuggles in with their four-legged siblings.
▼ “Back at home for the first time in a while and my dog won’t leave me.”
While we’d like to think that our canine and feline family members will love and remember us for as long as we do them, for some of these Japanese Twitter users that is sadly not the case.
▼ “I came back home for a visit and my dog seems to have completely forgotten me and is barking like crazy. I’m crying.”
▼ “My dog has basically forgotten me.”
▼ “We’ve had our dog for years, but he’s completely forgotten me. No matter how many times I call him he ignores me and acts like I’m a stranger.”
You shouldn’t feel too bad: our pets age much faster than we do, which means that months must be like years for them, right? If a human hasn’t seen someone for years they may not immediately recognize the other party, so it must be the same for pets. Yes, we are sure that’s it! (…You wouldn’t really forget me would you, Boomer?)
▼ Eyes wide and head tilted as if to say, “And you are…?”
▼ “When I come home, my dog won’t keep me company.”
▼ “Looking at me with those frightened eyes, lol”
▼ “My cat back home didn’t even notice me. My life is over.”
▼ “My cat’s forgotten me. I’m back in Hyogo.”
▼ “She refuses to look me in the eye.”
▼ ”It’s been so long since I’ve been home, my cat won’t let me pet her!”
▼ “Came home after six months away to find this unknown mean-eyed cat. I’m shocked…”
We hope that after a day or two, the memories came flooding back to ignite wagging tails and rumbling purrs once again… until next year!
