And the mystery Frappuccino flavor is … ?
As readers of our site may be aware, Halloween has become an increasingly big event in Japan in recent years. And this trick-or-treat season, Starbucks Japan has apparently decided to add to the excitement with a limited-edition Halloween drink that will be available for just seven days. The catch is, they’re not announcing what flavor the drink is.
That’s right, Starbucks Japan is now serving a Halloween Frappuccino drink, but they’re purposely not advertising the flavor of the drink, calling it the Halloween Mystery Frappuccino. Naturally, we just had to find out what the mystery flavor is, so we headed to a Starbucks to order the special drink the day it was released!
▼ The Mystery Frappuccino looked dark and sinfully sweet, and we were more than ready to try it!
The dark sauce which covered the cocoa-colored whipped cream looked somewhat like cobwebs, ready to trap us with its sweetness.
The base Frappuccino drink under the whipped cream appeared to be a somewhat milky white color. What flavor could it be? Chestnut? Sweet Potato?
Since our mission wouldn’t be complete without finding out what flavor the drink actually was, we asked the staff if they could let us know the mystery flavor, or if they had to keep it a secret. They kindly told us that the whipped cream and sauce on top is chocolate flavored, and the base drink is a Caramel Frappuccino containing plenty of caramel sauce.
And yes, when we tried the drink, it was as sweet as the ingredients would suggest, but the caramel sauce seemed to be the main source of sweetness, and when it was mixed evenly with the rest of the drink, the ingredients combined to create a much more elegant taste, as if we were drinking a delicate frozen dessert from a fine confectionary shop.

The Halloween Mystery Frappuccino, priced at 540 yen (US$4.75, tall size only), is available from October 25 to 31, so make sure you don’t miss it if you’re at a Starbucks in Japan this week. It’s certainly a treat that we would welcome over any spooky trick!
