Perhaps we were wrong about cats being secret geniuses plotting to overthrow the world. This video, which is receiving a lot of attention in Japan today, suggests that there is at least one member of the feline federation that is perhaps a few strands short of a cat’s cradle.
When two-year-old Chai here spots a plastic bag on the floor of her owner’s apartment, she is naturally keen to investigate. Little does she know, though, that once she climbs inside it, the bag will simply refuse to let go…
Shared on YouTube by owner and cat blogger Festa0511, this video depicts one cat’s epic struggle with a cruel manmade creation.
It all starts off simply enough as we see Chai decide to pop her head inside the empty plastic bag. Like most cats, if there’s something to squeeze herself into, Chai’s willing to give it a go.
It’s when she tries to climb back out of the bag, however, that things start to go wrong.

It is here, as Chai’s owner comments in the video, that the real tragedy begins. For the next five minutes, the poor little cat wrestles, runs, claws at and bites the bag, but only seems to make things progressively worse for herself until her owner eventually steps in to lend a hand.
▼ With her head and legs through the hole, the cat proceeds to wander around the room with an air of denial.
Until she realises she’s in trouble.
▼ “Gah! Get off me!”
After running around for a while, with one almighty effort, Chai manages to get free.
Well, almost.
Instead of having her legs tangled, the handle is now around her waist, the bag flapping behind her like a giant wind sock as she tries to run and leap to safety.
▼ “Maybe if I go around and around in circles it will come off.”
▼ “Why aren’t you helping meeee!?”
Chai then seemingly decides to attempt going about her daily business and ignoring the bag completely. Perhaps thinking that if she acts natural it will release her.
She attempts drinking water from her bowl…
But soon realises that the merciless plastic creature is still very much with her.

▼ “Aaaaaaarrrggh”
▼ “I admit defeat. The bag wins.”
Finally, Chai’s owner decides to step in and removes the bag from her body. In a way we’re glad they decided to leave Chai to deal with it on her own and document it for us, but we’re fairly sure the cat will never forget how her owner simply stood by and watched while she struggled.
And what does Chai immediately do after being freed?
Yup, goes right back to the bag.
Though thankfully she seems to have learned her lesson on this occasion.
