Twitter photo comics were the platform for a six-panel post-breakup transformation meme earlier this year.
Using the tagline “you broke up with me ’cause that girl’s cuter?” (‘ano ko no hou ga kawaii kara’), the comics typically show a girl transforming herself from a bookish persona into a fully made-up “cute” version of herself.
Then, men started doing them too. And cats. And babies.
It all started with photo sets like this one:
▼ “You broke up with me ’cause that girl’s cuter? That’s fine, I’ll just get a new boyfriend!”
Quickly, things moved into comedic territory:
▼ “YOU BROKE UP WITH ME ‘CAUSE THAT GIRL’S CUTER? FINE, I’LL JUST GET A NEW BOYFRIEND!”
▼ “You broke up with me ’cause that girl’s cuter? No way, no way!!“
▼ “You broke up with me ’cause that girl’s cuter?…Wait. Huh? I never ever had a boyfriend!”
▼ “You broke up with me ’cause that guy’s better looking? You need to get your eyes tested.”
Some were awesomely gender-bending:
▼ “You broke up with me ’cause that guy’s cooler? Fine, I’ll just get a new boyfriend!”
And some were just adorable.
▼ “You’re giving my little brother milk ’cause he’s cuter than me? Fine! I’ll just…eat this rice then!”
The cats are our favourites though:

▼ “You petted the other cat ’cause she doesn’t get angry or upset? Fine, I’ll turn into a monster!“
