Evangelion credit cards mean you will (not) need to carry cash

Visa is everywhere anime fans want to be, including Tokyo-3.

Believe it or not, when Neon Genesis Evangelion made its original television debut, one of the most notable things about the series was the fact that the producers initially eschewed much of the heavy merchandising that’s associated with anime, especially ones in the science fiction or giant robot genres. Of course, that’s all changed since then, and even when the flow of Eva animated installments stops, you can always count on a steady stream of new figures, shoes, or razors based on the hit series.

But with so much tempting Evangelion merchandise, fans might find themselves without enough cash on hand to purchase all they want. Now, though, even if you don’t have a single yen in your pocket, you can pay with your Evangelion credit card.

Financial group Sumitomo Mitsui and Visa have previously teamed up to create credit cards decorated with Pikachu and the cast of Attack on Titan. This time, they’re offering three different Eva Style Visa cards.

The type: EVA01 features the most iconic of the series’ hulking mecha, the Evangelion Unit-01.

▼ Instead of being registered to John Doe or the similarly anonymous-sounding Taro Yamato, this card is property of Evangelion’s Miasto Katsuragi.

The type: REI card is so evocative of the taciturn Eva pilot that if you stare at it long enough, you can almost hear voice actress Megumi Hayashibara encouraging you to buy something with it.

▼ Man, Asuka is gonna be pissed when she finds out Kaji is rocking a Rei card.

Oddly enough, prideful pilot Asuka blends in so well with her robo ride, Evangelion Unit-02, that she’s actually hard to spot on the type: ASUKA card.

Even if you only use your Eva credit card for non-otaku purchases, you still get a special plastic file just for signing up, and can accumulate points when you use the card which can later be exchanged for exclusive Eva Style notepads and T-shirts.

If you could use a touch of anime in your finances (and the Sailor Moon credit card isn’t edgy enough for you), the Evangelion Visa cards, which are accepted in more than 200 countries around the globe, can be applied for online here. Given how low his salary is, though, we urge series protagonist Shinji to use his responsibly.
