Using the amenities at this bookshop cafe means pulling back a shelf of books like a character from a spy movie.
Bookworms and coffee lovers are making their way to a new cafe in Tokyo, and while it’s filled with beautiful interiors and a quiet, relaxing atmosphere, the recently opened establishment is making news for a strangely remarkable feature: its unusual hidden bathroom.
Located in Jinbōchō, a district reknowned for its used-book stores and publishing houses, the cafe is housed in a gorgeous new building that stands out with its unusual brick facade and large, wooden cellar-like door.
Opened on the first of September this year, the cafe is called Mafumi Coffee and Books, and it’s a beautiful oasis of calm in an otherwise bustling neighbourhood.
Inside, their cold drip coffee towers look beautiful as they slowly dribble cold water through the coffee grounds before collecting in the carafes below.
Along with their excellent, strong coffees, there’s also a delicious collection of cakes, light snacks, and even cheese and crackers on the menu.
After filling up on coffee, customers looking for the restroom are in for a special treat, as it’s cleverly hidden behind one of the bookshelves in the store.
▼ If you look closely, you can see the hinges on the shelf where the door is located.
A single book extends out from the bookshelf, acting as the door handle which pulls outwards to reveal a beautiful restroom behind.
▼ This cute clip shows just how exciting the restroom experience can be!
Even customers who don’t need to use the amenities are doing so, just so they can pull open the bookshelf like the star of a spy movie.
If you’re ever in the Jinbōchō district and find yourself in need of a strong coffee, a good book, or a restroom, pull up a chair at Mafumi Coffee and Books. It’s one of the most beautiful places to relax in the neighbourhood!
