Gyoza Hot Dog: Japan’s new must-try local street food

Jul 20, 2018

The Japanese city famous for eating takes its local food game to another level.

If you’ve ever visited Osaka, you’ll know why they use the saying “kuidaore” (“eat until you fall over“) to describe the area. From okonomiyaki to takoyaki and kushikatsu fried skewered treats, the city is home to so many eateries and culinary delights that you’ll be constantly eating to try to get through them all.

And if it wasn’t hard enough to keep track of all the must-try local specialties there before, there’s now a new contender on the scene that’s tantalising the eyes and tastebuds of visitors, and it’s called the Gyoza Dog.

▼ Behold Osaka’s new carb-on-carb offering.

Produced by Osaka Ohsho, one of Japan’s most popular no-frills Chinese restaurant chains, the new hot dog hybrid is only available at their Dotonbori branch in Osaka, which re-opened after a revamp on 10 July.

With their re-opening came the arrival of the New Gyoza Dog, which, as the name suggests, combines bread with pot stickers, and is available in six different varieties. For 1,000 yen (US$8.85) you can choose between the plain, which contains eight gyoza, or the Dotonbori and Cheese, Dotonbori and Wasabi or Wasabi and Cheese, which contain half-a-dozen gyoza each.

Those looking to fill their belly will be able to feast on the monster King for 2,000 yen, which comes with a dozen gyoza, and the wasabi, cheese, and Dotonbori yakisoba fillings.

▼ The King really is a feast to be shared, given the size of the regular Dogs (below) which are already quite hefty.

If that all sounds like too much, there’s a half-size containing three gyoza for 600 yen, or you could try their equally inventive Gyoza Senbei, which combines gyoza with a couple of senbei rice crackers. Customers who share images of the Gyoza dog or Gyoza Senbei on social media will also be able to receive a free drink or a free serving of fries or fried chicken with their meal.

▼ And service comes with a smile, as the staff are fun and friendly too.

So if you’re looking to try Osaka’s newest local specialty, head down to the Dotonbori branch of Osaka Ohsho and get your mouth around a Gyoza Dog. The Insta-friendly treat will no doubt be popping up all over social media soon so get in quick before all your friends do, and then top it all off with a pancake on a stick for dessert!
