Brand-new Cardcaptor Sakura Cafe opens in Tokyo this week, with Kero-chan calling the shots

Apr 24, 2018

Magical girl anime mascot opens his own restaurant at the foot of the Tokyo Skytree.

It’s pretty much a given that every magical girl anime series will feature some sort of cute animal mascot character, usually for the thinly-veiled purpose of selling branded merchandise. But while Cardcaptor Sakura’s Kero-chan is indeed adorable, he’s also a powerful ally for heroine Sakura Kinomoto, as he eventually becomes able to assist her in battle by breathing fire and creating energy barriers (and not of the glow stick variety).

Now Kero-chan is continuing his legacy of usefulness by opening his own restaurant in Tokyo. The Kero-chan Cafe is set to open later this month at the Sola Machi entertainment complex, located at the base of the Tokyo Skytree.

Kero-chan himself broke the news with:

Hey! How’s everyone doing?

I’ve got big, amazing news! My cafe is about to open! And it’s called…the Kero-chan Cafe! Yeah! (pause for applause)

Since it’s his name on the door, the menu is filled with Kero-chan’s favorite foods, starting with the Kero-chan Feast Plate (1,980 yen [US$18.50]) which is an indecisive eater’s dream come true, since it comes with stir-fried noodles takoyaki octopus dumplings, a Kero-chan-shaped pancake, and a dish of Japanese-style “purin” pudding and sliced fruit.

Not quite so hungry? 1,380 yen will get you the house tantanmen noodles, topped with a soft-oiled egg.

Or if you’ve only got room for dessert, the pancake, pudding, and dessert are available together for 1,680 yen in the Kero-chan Pancake Purin à la Mode plate.

Rounding out the entrée options are the Pancake Souvenir Box, which is available to-go and includes the Kero-chan lunch box, a drink, a sandwich, fried fish, French fries, potato salad, and a pancake for 2,580 yen…

…and the Takoyaki Dog (1,380 yen with pictured sides, 880 yen à la carte).

If you’re still craving a little more sweetness, you can cap your meal with a swirl of soft serve ice cream for 280 yen.

Any cafe needs a lineup of beverages, too, and the Kero-chan Cafe has Rainbow Tapioca Clear Soda (1,680 yen), which is served with a Dream Wand straw

…and iced café au laits with latte art of Kero-chan and fellow familiar Spinel Sun (1,780 yen).

If those drink prices seem a little steep, it’s because you get to keep the character art glass jars they’re served in. On the other hand, if it’s the Kero-chan plates that you’ve got your eyes on, the large version is available for an additional charge of 1,200 yen for customers who order the Kero-chan Feast Plate, tantanmen noodles, Kero-chan Pancake Purin à la Mode, or Takoyaki Dog. A smaller plate is also offered for 680 yen to diners who order the soft serve ice cream.

As such, superfans might find themselves tempted to run up a hefty tab. On the bright side, spending more than 5,000 yen gets you a complimentary Kero-chan Cafe cloth tote bag.

And regardless of what your final bill comes to, each food item or drink you order gets you one of 10 special coasters.

The Kero-chan Cafe starts serving customers on April 27, and will remain open until July 8.
