A few weeks ago, we told you about Village Vanguard’s launch of Slime Curry, a rather curious blue foodstuff inspired by the bad-guy blobs of the Dragon Quest series. Not content with just informing you of its existence, one of the Japanese reporters at our sister site Pouch bravely volunteered to try the curry for herself and report back if she survived. Here’s what she had to say.
Hey, guys! The Slime Curry I preordered has finally arrived. I’ll leave it up to you whether that last sentence sounds anticipatory or apprehensive. I’ve heated it up and on the plate it definitely has the eye-watering shade of azure blue and the gooey consistency of its namesake. Not exactly appealing, but here we go!
Girding my loins, I dig in…
Reminding myself that the package specifically says “mild flavor” and that the ingredients are most just the usual onions, potatoes, garlic and the like, I try to pep talk my way to the first bite… for about an hour. Finally, I screw up the courage for a bite.
And I realize I’ve been betrayed. “Mild flavor,” my ass; this curry has some serious kick! And yet… it’s not bad. Actually, it’s pretty good!
And I inhale the rest
My curious family members gathered around, pestering me for a taste, but I easily polished off the whole plate. With these kind of boil-in-the-bag curries, usually it’s hard to get a sense for what the ingredients are, but Slime Curry has big chunks of tender chicken. Plus, with the blue color, you really don’t know what the chunks are until you put them in your mouth. It’s kind of like eating mulligan stew; you never know what you are going to get.
Presentation appears key
Truthfully, until I actually tasted it, I was very apprehensive, but it turns out that presentation matters more than you might have thought. Adding some decoration makes the experience more fun and the curry more appealing. Plus, instead of staring at that poisonous blue for an hour like I did, you can create some fun Halloween-themed tableaus or ocean scenes while you are psyching yourself up for the hurdle of that first bite.
Check these out!
▼ Panda relaxing in the pool, definitely not dissolving in a vat of noxious blue acid.
▼ A rice ghost emerges from the dark. Nobody say ectoplasm.
▼ A cheese ghost shrugs off the strangeness of blue curry, so you can too.
▼A standard slime. Defeat him with your appetite!
There really isn’t a lot of blue food available, so you can create some very unique designs. Although it might not look it, the Slime Curry is quite tasty and provides hours of entertainment, so why not give it a shot? It turned out okay for me, anyway!
