Haisu Tian is a Chinese artist based in the USA where she studies for her master’s degree in fine art. Originally from a strict background in Chinese traditional painting, she has since begun to branch out into several other techniques. The most unique of these is a pair of inline skates fitted with some ink cans which she uses to craft large and elegant landscapes. It’s a technique that she calls “landskating,” and we find absolutely intoxicating.
In landskating, Tian attaches a refillable can to the front wheel of each skate. By pouring ink into the can, the skate appears to act sort of like a ballpoint pen.
In this way, rather than using only the muscles of the arm to create strokes, Tian must use her entire body which is supported by her “brushes.”
Despite the unorthodox style of painting, she still manages to capture the same organic feeling of simple yet meticulous strokes which are often found in traditional Asian styles. As she puts it, “I want to inherit the traditional spirit but push myself further to enrich, develop and innovate how I see painting.”
The end result in the video is a work titled “Blood-land-line” depicting lush mountainous slopes caressing a negative space river. The painting itself is also unique in that it’s a continuous image that runs both up the wall and along the ground.
In addition to her ink works, many of which have gotten her several awards, the 27-year-old artist has also released two Chinese language vocal albums. Despite all these achievements it looks like Haisu Tian is only getting warmed up in the arts so be sure to follow her progress on the links below and see how she bends tradition next.
