Some would say it’s wrong to go to a fancy steakhouse and order a burger. If so, then we don’t want to be right.
Japan is in the middle of a burger boom right now. Along with a growing number of independent hamburger cafes in and around Tokyo, American chains Carl’s Jr. and Shake Shack have recently set up shop in Japan, giving us more options than ever for places to satisfy our meaty sandwich cravings.
But what if you’re in the mood for a burger, but not one that’s so quick or casual? In that case, a trip to the Grand Hyatt Tokyo is in order. Located in the trendy Roppongi neighborhood, the hotel’s Oak Door Burger, served in its posh Oak Door steakhouse, is known by burger fans to be a delicacy of the highest order.
And as for a burger that you can take your time with? Well, we’d say that’s the only way to enjoy the Giant Oak Burger.
▼ The 8,800-yen (US$80) Giant Oak burger (right) vs. a regular-sized Oak Burger (left)
The Giant Oak Burger measures 22 centimeters (8.7 inches) across, with a patty that tips the scales at a solid kilogram (2.2 pounds). In other words, if you take a quarter-pound to be the size of an average hamburger, it’s practically nine sandwiches worth of burger.
▼ Seriously, that bun wouldn’t make a bad throw pillow.
Don’t think that it’s so big because they skimp on the other ingredients, either. Lift up that gargantuan bun’s top half, and inside you’ll find bacon, cheese, tomato, lettuce, and fried onions.
▼ Oh, and it also comes with fries!
Being a high-class establishment, The Oak Door doesn’t force you to heft the burger with both hands and throw your face into it. Instead, the wait staff slices the sandwich like a cake, which also makes it easier to share with friends.
▼ Cooked just the way we asked!
Speaking of sharing, we realized this was too much burger for any one person to eat, so we sent three of our ace/starving reporters to the table: Mr. Sato, P.K. Sanjun, and Harada.
But make no mistake. The Giant Oak Burger isn’t trying to get by on its size alone, as its also absolutely delicious. The meat is juicy, the bun fluffy, and the crisp fried onions a great accent to all the other flavors. As a matter of fact, it’s so tasty that our team of three ate the whole thing, finishing with their stomachs full and their faces smiling.
If all this has your mouth watering, call over to The Oak Door and let them know you’re coming (the Giant Oak Burger is available only by reservation). You’ll want to act fast, though, as this colossal sandwich is only available until May 31 (presumably to keep Japan from running out of beef).
