It’s cicada season in Japan, but this Twitter user doesn’t let their creepy, crunch remains get them down!
In Japan, nothing screams “summer” more loudly than the buzzing cry of thousands of cicadas. Love ’em or hate ’em, the flying insects hold a special significance in Japanese culture. Whether they’re making appearances in classical Japanese literature or are being netted by avid bug collectors, cicadas are undoubtedly an important part of summer in Japan.
While most people are content with catching the buggers and admiring their, er… unique beauty, others, like Twitter user @3kyk212, like to get a little more creative. When you have thousands of cicadas invading every tree in your neighborhood, you’re also going to have an abundance of empty cicada shells everywhere. To me, personally, they’re just creepy cicada remnants to avoid stepping on while walking around, but @3kyk212 apparently saw something else in the empty shells. That something else?
▼ Godzilla!
https://twitter.com/3kyk212/status/759999250910449664From its facial expression down to its toenails, each intricate detail on this spectacular Godzilla is made entirely of cicada shells. The internet is also nothing short of impressed:
“Cicadzilla Resurgence”
“This is way too cool (especially the hands and feet)”
“This is amazing. The concept and creativity are awesome too.”
“Whoever made this is genius.”
“This is art.”
@3kyk212 doesn’t specify how long this took to make, but by simply looking at the design, it’s not hard to imagine that this took a significant amount of time and effort. And, by looking at all of those spiny legs scattered over the work space, it also must have taken a pretty strong stomach to get past handling all of the crunch buggy bits!
