Nintendo announces grand opening date for new official shop in Tokyo, shows off exclusive merch

Japan’s first-ever official Nintendo store is almost here, but you can start putting together your shopping list right now.

There aren’t many companies that Japan is prouder of than Nintendo. A pioneering tech firm that changed the way the world thinks about entertainment, its status in Japanese society is sort of like if you combined Disney with Apple.

And just as those two companies have their own dedicated stores, so to is Tokyo about to get Japan’s first-ever official Nintendo shop. First announced last winter with a vague planned opening of “fall 2019,” we now know exactly when the doors will open: November 22.

The store, called Nintendo Tokyo, will be housed in the new Shibuya Parco shopping center that’s currently getting its finishing touches in Tokyo’s Shibuya district, not far from the famous Shibuya Scramble intersection and statue of loyal dog Hachiko. Nintendo Tokyo will be located on the sixth floor, and in addition to video games themselves, the shop will also be offering a huge range of character merchandise that you can’t purchase anywhere else, with a special procession illustration created specifically to celebrate the store’s grand opening!

Let’s dive into this deep sea of Nintendo merch, which features characters from Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Animal Crossing.

For those who can’t wait until the first open-to-the-public day, Nintendo is holding two pre-open events, one on November 20 and the other on the 21st, in which 250 lucky fans each day will get an advance opportunity to check out the store. Applications can be made online here between now and November 4 (a Nintendo Account is required).

Finally, in addition to items for sale, the shop will also have demo stations where fans can try out Nintendo titles like the recently released RingFit Adventure. Keep your eyes open if you’re grabbing a controller, since you never know when your opponent might be one of the top pro gamers in the world.
