Convenience store chain shares a secret way to turn its coffees into decadent dessert drinks.
If you’re looking for a great convenience store coffee, many people in Japan will steer you towards 7-Eleven. This chain is head-and-shoulders above the competition when it comes to freshly made coffees, and its lattes are particularly delicious, having a perfect balance between milk and coffee.
Now, 7-Eleven is sharing a genius hack that turns its latte into a salted caramel nut latte, and all the ingredients you need to make it are conveniently sold at the chain. After seeing the hack on the official 7-Eleven Twitter account, it looked so easy that we immediately headed out to try it, picking up the four things we needed to make it.
▼ Iced Cafe Latte, Vanilla Ice Cream, Mixed Nuts, Salted Caramel Sandwich cookies
The method is simple. Add two spoonfuls of vanilla ice cream to the top of the latte, break a couple of salted caramel cookies in half and place them around the top, then finish with a sprinkling of nuts and you’re done.
▼ The 7-Eleven iced latte is now…a decadent dessert drink!
It certainly looked fantastic, almost like something you’d get at a coffeehouse chain, but how would it taste?
Popping in a straw and taking a sip, we were greeted by the deliciously familiar flavour of 7-Eleven’s milky iced coffee, but then, when we reached the part where the ice cream had started to melt into the drink, we found a sweet creaminess.
The salted caramel sandwich cookie had melted into the drink, adding bitter caramel notes to the mix, with a faint hint of salt that was utterly delicious. After enjoying some indulgent sips, we decided to grab a spoon so we could scoop up some of the ice cream, and with crushed nuts in the mix we were able to enjoy the coffee-tinged ice cream with crunchy accents and hints of roasted flavour. It was so decadent that it blurred the line between coffee and dessert in a way that made it seem more like a dessert in a cup.
After trying the hack, we were so hooked on the flavour that we were tempted to buy another latte just so we could get a taste of it again. It really was a fast and fun alternative to lining up at a coffeehouse chain to order a dessert drink, and although the initial expenditure set us back to the tune of around 1,000 yen (US$6.60), which included the 270-yen cost of the latte, we still had cookies and nuts to spare for another few lattes.
So we do have everything we need for our next 7-Eleven run, and with the chain posting another hack (seen above) which turns the latte into a “Japanese-style Kuromitsu Latte” with the addition of kuromitsu (Japanese brown sugar syrup), we might just get even more creative and fuse the hacks together for another taste adventure.
