Do you enjoy the Japanese paper craft of origami? If you do, here’s a video that’s sure to fascinate you! The video shows an exquisite paper rose being made, and it’s been receiving a considerable amount of attention recently – and not just for the impressive skill demonstrated. It’s actually causing many internet viewers to cry out in frustration, and once you see the video, you’ll know the reason why.
The video was uploaded to the Japanese video-sharing website Nico Nico Douga by a user by the name of Tatan in April and has been viewed over 140,000 times since then. The paper rose crafted in the 8 minute video looks amazingly real, with all the delicate petals expertly recreated.
However, although the video shows the entire process of the rose being made, comments have been posted by viewer after viewer crying out “I can’t follow this!”or “I have no idea what’s going on here!”. You might wonder how hard it can be to follow the moves if it’s shown entirely on video, but it really isn’t that straightforward, as you’ll see if you watch the actual video.
If you try to copy what is being done on the video, you’ll probably find that although you’ve tried to do everything exactly the same, you’ve gone wrong somewhere along the way, and your origami just doesn’t look right. It’s completely understandable if you feel like shouting out in frustration. (Me? I probably won’t get one-third of the way through before I go completely nuts.) We thought origami was just supposed to be simple, straight folding of paper, but I guess we were wrong.
For your information, the rose created here is called a “Kawasaki Rose”, named after its creator, Toshikazu Kawasaki, who is not only an origami expert but a mathematician who teaches at a technical college in Tokushima Prefecture. The Kawasaki Rose is actually a very famous origami pattern known around the world, but there aren’t many people around who can successfully make one of these beautiful paper roses. (No surprise there!)
Well, one thing the video does show is that origami is a skill to be mastered like any other form of art. By the way, if you’re thinking of taking up origami, don’t worry, most origami patterns are nothing like this! There are many fun easy patterns, so do give it a try by all means, if you’re interested.
