Believe it or not, a Lego Jar Jar Binks has existed for years, but the iconic DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future has only just now been immortalized in block form.
Starting out in 1949 as a seemingly simple toy set consisting of multicolored blocks that fastened together, Lego has grown into a vast toy and ever more complicated empire spanning hundreds, even thousands, of play sets depicting iconic characters and scenes from geek culture.
Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Spider Man, and The Lord of the Rings have all seen Lego incarnations, yet despite being the film series that popularized the standard geek trope of time travel, Back to the Future has never enjoyed an official Lego licensed play set. Until now!
And from the extremely slick looks of it, not since the gloriously meta Lego Minecraft play set has a Lego theme caused so many nerds to squee! in sheer nerdgasm delight.

Of course, a DeLorean time machine toy would not be complete without a flux capacitor, a California license plate reading “OUTATIME” and dashboard time travel-ometer – preferably reading “Destination time: 1/28/1958 – and Lego’s DeLorean delivers in spades on all fronts.
Our only complaint with the play set is that the film-accurate Marty McFly Lego Guy comes with a standard, wheeled skateboard, when clearly a hoverboard was called for, though perhaps that’s merely a hint at things to come.
The DeLorean Lego kit is the fourth kit produced from the Lego Cuusoo project, where Lego kit ideas can be submitted and any idea that reaches 10,000 supporters becomes a legitimate commercial product. The DeLorean kit was designed by two Japanese hobbyists. Some proceeds go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, and the kit will set you back 6,047 yen (US$61).
