A man visiting a zoo in Luohe City, Henan Province in China was surprised to hear what he described as “barking” coming from the enclosure marked “African lion.” But that’s silly, lions don’t bark, they roar…
According to Beijing Youth Daily, after confirming that there was indeed a canine in the lion cage, the man, who was accompanied by his son, asked staff members about the dog. Zoo staff claimed that they were in possession of a lion, but said it was sent to a “breeding facility.” A staff member who was taking care of his friend’s particularly vicious Tibetan mastiff, decided placed the dog in the lion’s cage for “safety reasons.” A strange choice, but we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. However, that doesn’t explain why there was, as the Beijing Youth Daily reports, a white fox in the leopard cage and a different dog where the wolves were supposed to be held.

The entrance fee to the zoo only costs a reported 15 yuan (US$2.45), so what do you expect, right? And in all fairness, the Tibetan Mastiff, the type of dog that brought the man’s attention to the shady dealings of this zoo, does look a lot like a small lion.
