A Wednesday press conference at Tokyo’s Akagi Shrine announced that Masayuki Ochiai (Parasite Eve, Shutter, live-action TV The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) will write and direct a new Juon/The Grudge horror film. Juon: Owari no Hajimari (The Grudge: Beginning of the End) will begin shooting on Tuesday and will open in Japanese theaters on June 28.
Nozomi Sasaki (Tenshi no Koi, Dohyo Girl) will star as a schoolteacher named Yui who goes to investigate her student’s home after he is absent. The student, Toshio Saeki (Kai Kobayashi), lives in a house hiding a horrific secret. Yui must relive the horrors that took place there 10 years ago and find the truth hiding in the home.
The first Juon: The Grudge film opened in theaters in Japan in 2003 and was adapted into a Hollywood live-action film starring Sarah Michelle Gellar in 2004. The horror film franchise received two more Hollywood adaptations and multiple sequels in Japan, with the most recent released in 2009. Oz Productions, the first film’s Japanese production company led by prominent horror film producer Takashige Ichise, filed for bankruptcy in 2012.
