Japan loves showing off the reasons why it is the king of the plastic model world. Two months ago we saw some amazing creations at the Amazing Japan Model Expo 2015, and now this month that tradition is continuing with Wonder Festival Summer 2015, an exhibition for artists to show off their sculpted creations.
But there’s something special about Wonder Festival. Whereas other plastic model exhibits focus on scantily clad female figures, Wonder Festival was completely dominated by sculptures of male characters, ranging from the dashing and handsome to the outright seductive.
Curious to see what an exhibit full of these plastic hunks is like? Read on!
A lot of the male figures were based on characters from the web-based collectible card game Token Ranbu. It’s more or less a gender-swapped version of the popular Kantai Collection game, and with swords instead of warships. The game has been quite successful in Japan, especially among younger women, with more than one million registered players.
▼ “We will fight for you, my lady! And then totally make with each other afterward.”
So knowing exactly what we were getting ourselves into, we made our way to Wonder Festival.
▼ Wait a minute… that sign is covered in the wrong gender!
▼ Ah yes. Much better once we get inside.
▼ Our first figure doesn’t hold back at all. Token Ranbu’s Mikazuki Munechika is showing off how sultry a swordsman can be.
▼ No… Mikazuki-san! We can’t….!
▼ Phew. Luckily he decided he had a little cleaning to do instead.
▼ And here’s some black-and-white versions for those who can’t handle the heart-throbbing intensity of the colored ones.
▼ One of Token Ranbu’s most popular male swordsmen, Kashu Kiyomitsu.
▼ Kashu-san, how do you fight in those heels?! And in such tight leather pants?!
▼ “By always remembering who I’m fighting for… you.”
Swoon.
▼ For those who prefer a more Japanese-style swordsman, there’s Taro Tachi waiting for you.
▼ And Shokudaikiri Mitsutada, who looks like he’d kidnap you, fall in love with you, then fight to rescue you back from the people he sold you to. What a guy.
▼ And for anyone intimidated by all the long swords, there’s dagger-wielding Yagen Toshiro.
▼ Here’s Kashu Kiyomitsu again, this time slacking off while fellow swordsman Yamatonokami Yasusada does all the sweeping.
▼ There were also some characters from Token Ranbu Online, like this big-headed Tsurumaru Kuninaga.
▼ And all his friends!
▼ There’s big-headed Mikazuki Minechika giving a seductive glare- no you keep your shirt on this time Mikazuki-san!
▼ Big-headed foxy-man Kogitsune Maru…
▼ And even big-headed Kashu Kiyomitsu.
See? I told you he was popular (but he’s totally mine so back off!)
▼ The dashing one-eyed kidnapper Shokudaikiri Mitsutada again, this time in a much less intimidating form.
▼ A grayscale Mikazuki Munechika with all of his clothes on for once.
▼ And an inviting Kashu Kiyomitsu to round things out. Here, you go on ahead and keep looking at the other figures. I’ll, uh, I’ll just stay here for a minute with this one….
▼ Kogitsune Maru looks a little too bite-y, but hey, if that’s your thing, then you do you.
▼ Of course it wasn’t all Token Ranbu figures. Here’s Shoyo and Tobio from the volleyball anime Haikyu!
▼ And the badboy Oikawa.
▼ The womanizing Kojaku from DRAMAtical Murder.
▼ The boys from everybody’s favorite singing visual romance novel, Uta no Prince-sama.
▼ No bishonen figure collection would be complete without something from Free! Here we get the boys as their childhood selves.
▼ One figure company, MegaHouse, is putting out original figures of its own, such as these baseball-loving guys.
▼ There’s also a “Black Butler” series of figures, for those looking for a dash of creepy in their brand of male sexiness.
▼ “Oops I accidentally broke your giant chess set with my chainsaw.”
Swoon.
▼ “M’lady.”
Phew! Is it getting hot in here or is it just the figures? If you want to see more, then check out the Wonder Festival hashtag on Twitter, or book your tickets for the winter exhibition at their website.
