Once a hairstyle for married women of samurai families, this kit provides the tools for anyone to tackle this traditional ‘do in minutes!
The marumage—a traditional hairstyle worn by married women in the Edo period from the early 1600s to mid-1800s—fell out of fashion long ago, but can still be seen at formal events like weddings, and Himi City in Toyama Prefecture even has a marumage festival, where a procession of unmarried women in kimono and hair styled in marumage fashion go to a local temple to pray to the goddess of mercy. Hair styling packages are often offered at kimono rental studios in Japan to complement the look, and more likely than not you’ll the marumage as an optional style.

Now, with a little help from a few essentials in this new Marumage Kit, you can recreate this look whenever you want! The kit isn’t exactly a steal, but will pay for itself if you forgo the hairdresser and do it yourself instead. For 8,800 yen (US$80), the kit includes two side pieces and one piece for the back of the head that gives your hair the perceived volume needed to recreate that well-known look. The material clings to your hair without damaging it, allowing for easy styling.
Also included is a comb, one large and four small elastic hair bands, and four hair pins. The only thing you need to prepare is your choice of gel or hairspray to hold the hair in place.

The video below demonstrates the styling process, which the website claims can be done in five to 15 minutes. The lovely model in this video completes it in less than 10.
Due to the popularity of the product, it appears there are currently no more kits in stock, but you can enter your email address in at the website to receive a notification when they are back in (sorry, Japanese only). In the meantime, you can stock up on some of their other hair accessories to add an elegant touch to your marumage!
