Snapchat: “I see dead people…”
How on earth did we entertain ourselves before the invention of such laughter-inducing apps as Snapchat (and its Face Swap function)?
Well, as it turns out, Snapchat may not be all fun and games, as one girl’s app is seeing something that the rest of us aren’t…
https://twitter.com/mittyaro_/status/746751199425101826Twitter-user @mittyaro_ explains that, while working night shift, she heard the call button ring from the bathroom, even though no one was there. When she went to investigate, she decided to record with Snapchat, which can recognize faces and will add silly effects to those who show up on screen. But when she pointed her phone towards the bathroom, the well-known dog filter popped up, even though there were no faces there. Well, at least none that we could see…
“I don’t like this, I want to go home,” she wrote.
Commentors began speculating that, judging from how large the filter was showing up, the “ghost” or whatever it happened to be was right in front of her, and that it was opening its mouth, since the tongue function is activated when the subject of the video does just that.
One commentor, however, pointed out that the layout of the bathroom could possibly be mistaken as a face by Snapchat’s algorithm.
https://twitter.com/4cret2/status/747083240746291208She argues that the bag and the pipes could be confused as the eyes, the space between the window and the pipes as the bridge of the nose, and the line where wall meets floor as the mouth, and included an illustration pointing out the “face” in the bathroom. This certainly wouldn’t be the first time Snapchat’s face recognition had failed. However, that still doesn’t explain the mystery of who pressed the bathroom call button…
What do you guys think: is this just another case of malfunctioning Snapchat, or something more sinister?
