Join us for a truly one-of-a-kind look at the biggest titles of Tokyo Game Show 2018.
It is time once again for the Tokyo Game Show! This is when the biggest names in the video game industry come out to preview some of the most anticipated titles for the coming year. To give you an exclusive first look at some of these games, we sent our most trustworthy reporter, Daiichiro Tashiro, to cover it prior to opening day.
However, after playing through the hottest titles TGS had to offer, he lost the company iPhone and all of the pictures contained within on the train ride back. As punishment for losing such an expensive piece of electronics, we made him write his review anyway and instructed him to draw – by hand and memory – screenshots of the games he played.
So without further ado, here is his coverage:
Kingdom Hearts III Review
by Daiichiro Tashiro
Anyone who knows me will tell you I’m a huge Disney fanatic. In fact, I love it so much I moved to Urayasu, the home of Tokyo Disney Resort. So it’s no surprise the game I was most excited about was Kingdom Hearts III. While having the chance to play it, I was smiling uncontrollably the entire time.
Kingdom Hearts is a role playing series in which Disney characters appear. At TGS I was able to play through the Toy Story stage demo. Being able to go on an adventure with Woody and Buzz as my trusted companions made my heart melt.
▼ Sora, Woody, and Buzz take on a squad of Playboy bunnies in a room where the doorknob is as high as the light switch.
Compared to Kingdom Hearts I and II, the graphics were stunningly beautiful and crisp. I couldn’t even blink while exploring Andy’s room, and it was as if I were actually in the movie.
There also seem to be levels based on other Disney hits like Tangled and Big Hero 6. Still, even if you aren’t a Disney fan, the gameplay and story are good enough to keep anyone interested.
Jump Force Review
by Daiichiro Taisho
I had already known about this game, and to be honest I wasn’t very excited for it. I’ve played Shonen Jump themed games before and they’re usually mediocre fighters just trying to cash in on the popularity of the characters. Jump Force just looked like more of the same for a new generation.
However, after playing it first-hand I can thankfully say I was dead wrong about this one! Jump Force uses legendary characters like Luffy and Goku but this time all of the battles feel authentic and meticulously crafted. The character designs, the sense of speed, and the power of the moves all feel true to the anime and manga counterparts.
▼ Luffy kicks Frieza into a large avocado.
If fact, I think they could make an entire anime feature using these gorgeous graphics and it would feel just like the originals!
Mega Man 11 Review
by Daiichiro Tashiro
Like most gamers, I have fond memories of playing Mega Man as a child. It was always a reliable series of games, and as I approached the Mega Man 11 booth at TGS, I felt that same sense of security. It was like going back to my childhood home.
Mega Man 11 doesn’t betray that faith either. It stays true to its core mechanics of eight levels, each guarded by a boss, such as Tundra Man or Acid Man, who you must defeat and acquire special abilities from. This time the characters and items are all given 3-D makeovers but still ring true to the originals.
▼ Left: Original Mega Man after acquiring Bloat Man’s special ability, Right: Mega Man 11… still coping with his meth habit after all these years
The stage design, controls, difficulty, and speed are all well balanced as you’d come to expect from a Mega Man game. Because of that it will appeal to long-time fans both be very enjoyable for first-timers as well.
Well, that’s my review. I’d like to wish all of you happy gaming! And… If you have an iPhone please take a moment to go into Settings and turn on “Find My iPhone” by tapping on your Apple ID, then the iCloud tab.
You never know when you’re going to need it!
We’d like to thank Daiichiro for soldiering through on his TGS coverage, and also ask that if anyone comes across this iPhone X with a lock screen wallpaper featuring P.K. Sanjun smoking a cigarette, please contact us.
That thing was really expensive…
