The famous symbol of freedom gets a new twist in Yokosuka as torch and tablet are replaced by nakedness and fist pumps.
When you think of the Statue of Liberty, your first thought generally goes to the one representing freedom and the United States of America. And if you were in Japan, you might probably think about the replica that you can find in Tokyo’s Odaiba area. But we heard that there’s actually one in Yokosuka, named “Jiyuu no megami“, which is the Japanese name for the “Statue of Liberty” in the U.S., and that looks nothing like the one we grew up knowing. So, it’s only natural that our reporter, Masanuki Sunakoma, went on a little adventure, to see if it actually existed and if so just how different it might be.
A little anxious and not knowing what to expect, our reporter arrived at Yokosuka Chuo Koen, or Yokosuka Central Park, home to the area’s cultural center and museum, and apparently where this epic looking statue is said to be located. He headed in the direction of the museum, noticing the green patch next to it. Moving slowly onto the grassy area, he noticed a couple of statues…
What caught his eye first was the horse, since he had heard that the Statue of Liberty was a woman riding a horse. Bingo!
But it was what he saw above it that made his jaw drop; a woman naked with two arms up in the air, her fists clenched, and her face looking like she could be screaming “Yay!” while sat on the horse.
▼ Nothing says freedom quite like that…
Our reporter was amazed at the majestic aura he sensed just looking at the Statue of Liberty before his eyes. The powerful gaze she seemed to be giving him from up above was almost a little intimidating. An important thing to note: this statue was made by Japanese sculptor Seibo Kitamura, who made the famous 10-metre (33-foot) high Peace Statue at the Nagasaki Peace Park in Nagasaki.
▼ The right hand of Nagasaki’s Peace Statue points to the threat of nuclear weapons while the extended left hand symbolizes eternal peace.
And that’s not all. Apparently there is another Statue of Liberty (a replica of the one in America) on the roof of a hotel in Yokosuka! Can you believe there’s two statues in one city? We encourage you to check both of them out especially if you were unlucky enough to see the scary and disgusting giant-testicled pig statue.
