Gamers outside of Japan were not doubt disappointed to learn that past limited editions of Nintendo’s popular 3DS portable console were not for sale outside of the company’s homeland, and are likely still sad that they missed out on the Mint White and Pikachu Yellow models that Japanese gamers snapped up in the blink of an eye. But we’re happy to report that for once it’s Japanese gamers who will be turning as green with envy as this Yoshi-emblazoned 3DS XL, as it is heading to North America and Europe only this month alongside the colourful new platformer Yoshi’s New Island.
That’s right game fans, Nintendo has announced that this green-and-white Yoshi-themed 3DS XL will be released in North America on March 14 priced at US$199.99. The UK will also be receiving the console (though you’ll have to pick it up via Nintendo’s online store), which unlike the North American version will be bundled with a copy of Yoshi’s New Island, for £199.99.
Yoshi’s New Island is a direct sequel to the acclaimed 1995 SNES title Yoshi’s Island (which also happens to be one of this writer’s favourite games of all time), and features bright, cutesy levels in a hand-drawn style. Reviews for the game have yet to surface, and internet rumour has suggested that, in line with Nintendo’s recent trend of making its games accessible to players of all abilities, Yoshi’s New Island may disappoint fans of the original by offering comparatively little challenge. Henry Gilbert over at GamesRadar, however, commented that he found later sections of the game surprisingly tricky during this extended play-test, so there may be hope for us yet!
