Just when you thought “anime girls with boobs so big they can’t stand up” was going to walk away with the award for this week’s most exaggerated character design, here comes a new challenger.
When video game publisher Atlus released Dragon’s Crown in 2013, it was the first full-fledged, big-budget side-scrolling beat ‘em up to come out in years. But it wasn’t just the gameplay that was a massively updated throwback, but the graphics, which eschewed polygons and CG models for luxuriously hand-drawn sprite art that would have overwhelmed the limited cartridge capacities and CD loading times of yesteryear’s hardware.
The impressive visuals are the work of creator and art director George Kamitani, whose incredibly stylized character designs immediately establish that Dragon’s Crown takes place in a fantasy realm. But what happens when you try to take that fantasy and render it in the real world?
That there is Japanese figure maker Beat’s just-announced Amazon, a 1:6-scale recreation of one of the six selectable heroes in Dragon’s Crown. The title’s swiftest and most powerful attacker, she’s described in the game as forgoing heavy armor and letting her muscular body serve as her defense.
▼ The Amazon’s Dragon’s Crown design
Believe it or not, the player-selectable Amazon’s attire is more modest than some of the game’s supplemental artwork, which implies that the other amazons of the Dragon’s Crown world strut about completely topless.
▼ So, by that standard, is this formal attire?
While it’s nothing new for anime and video game characters to be unrealistically busty, we can’t recall the last time we saw a figure, female or male, with such an exaggerated, frankly bizarre musculature. The Amazon already looked a little awkward in certain in-game animation frames, but being able to view the character in three-dimensional space hammers home how ridiculously ripped the axe-wielder is.
We suppose you could make the argument that swinging that giant halberd (which the figure can grip with the head high or low) around all day is a great workout, and would definitely build muscle mass.
But we’re not sure she actually needs a weapon, since we’re pretty sure she could just stab orcs and goblins to death with her pointy hips.
If you’d like to add the Amazon to your party, Beat says the figure will be going on sale this coming March and will be priced at 17,064 yen (US$142).
